Challenge

Johnsons of Rainham have been established over 55 years and are active members of the British Hardware federation.

Predominantly Johnsons are known to be traditional ironmongers and tool specialists. However they have a wide range of timber, plumbing, decorating, gardening, electrical, motor and household products, which are nearly always held in stock.

In this day where all too often the small business is forced to close due to the emergence of the large multi-national DIY companies, customers of Johnsons find themselves travelling from all over the country to purchase from a comprehensive product range, where they are confident of receiving good advice and service the traditional way. If Johnsons haven't got it they will find someone who can!


Solution

In our capacity as IT Consultant, The Total Package, was asked to investigate replacing their main accounting system in readiness for the year 2000, due to the incompatibility of their old system.

After spending many months evaluating various software solutions available The Total Package recommended Intuit's QuickBooks for Windows due to the specific needs of Johnsons, which could only be satisfied by this product. The product was installed along with a small network of computers in the accounts department, where all administration is managed. One to one training was then provided in order that they could maximise their use of the new system, which was for the first time able to cater for the complete accounts function in the business.

Sometime later there was a need to link up with their main suppliers to provide a live ordering facility to make the buying process more efficient and to have access to detailed product information. A new computer was installed on the shop floor along with ISDN links to provide secure outgoing remote access along with access to the Internet and email.


Benefit

Johnsons, being a small business, feel confident they have access to independent quality advice, rather than having to employ someone full time for that function. Whenever a problem occurs, advice is sought or a new idea is formed, Johnsons feel they have a single point of contact at their disposal.
